KEY FIGURES

There are 67 social enterprises for customised work active in Flanders. At present, they employ around 20,000 people, most of whom are people who have difficulty accessing the labour market (approx. 16,500).

The number of people with a disability employed by the sheltered workplaces (now social enterprises for customised work) in Flanders has gradually increased in recent years. In 1975, fewer than 6,000 people in total with a disability worked for these companies. 25 years later, that figure had more than doubled.

The total operating income of the sheltered workplaces (now social enterprises for customised work) was 560.9 million euros in 2010. The return for the government is greater than its contribution to the loss of performance.

Since 1 April 2015, the former sheltered and social workplaces have been known as ‘social enterprises for customised work’. The target group of employees was broadened to include people who have difficulty accessing the labour market.
